How to add a chat to your website
Put a chat bubble on your Otto site or any other website, answered by Otto from what you told it about your business and your products.
Updated 2026-10-24
Website chat puts a chat bubble on your website. A visitor asks a question, about your business or, on a shop, about the product they are looking at, and Otto answers. It is under Growth → Website, on the Chat tab, or below the three setup steps if you have no Otto site yet. An owner or admin switches it on.
What it answers from
- What you wrote under Knowledge → About the business. If that is empty, the chat can only pass questions to you, and the Chat tab says so.
- Your Store: when a visitor is on a product page, the price and stock come from your connected store, not from the page.
- The page the visitor is on.
It never agrees to a price, refund, booking or discount itself, and never asks for payment details. When it can't answer, or someone wants a person, it asks for their name and email. They become a contact with the source Website chat, with their question in a note, and you get a notice. They are never signed up for marketing.
Switch it on
- Open Website → Chat.
- Turn on Website chat.
- Choose a First message (or keep the one shown), a Colour, and Most answers a day.
- Press Save.
On your Otto website there is nothing else to do: every published page shows the chat.
On another website
Once the chat is switched on, it can go on any website you run, such as a Shopify store:
- Under On another website, type the address visitors see, for example yourstore.com, and press Add website. The chat only answers on websites in this list.
- Press Copy beside the line of code.
- Paste it into your site just before the closing body tag. On a Shopify store, once the chat is switched on: Online Store → Themes → ⋯ → Edit code → layout/theme.liquid, paste, and save.
